Massage For Your Allergies

The benefits of massage for your Allergies

Nope, I’m not kidding!  Regular massage can be an effective tool in helping your body during allergy season.  I can share a little bit about the science of this and a personal experience.

The watered down science

Our lymphatic system or immune system is our body’s “garbage disposal.”  Much of this system lies closely beneath the skin.  Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart to propel its fluids through the body.  It relies on our breathing and movement of the joints.
During allergy season our immune system over-reacts to the stimuli like pollen and creates the symptoms we’re accustomed to; itchy eyes, sneezing, hives, etc. We can help our bodies during allergy season by keeping our lymphatic system moving!  There are a few ways you can do this.

One, exercise.

By moving your joints through activities like walking you propel the lymph fluid through your body and help it to be flushed out of your system.

Two, deep breathing.

This goes along well with exercising, of course, but even on it’s own, sitting and taking some good, deep breaths each day is good for you on many levels.

Three, massage!

Getting regular massages before and during allergy season may help lessen your suffering during allergy season!  One of the techniques I can incorporate in your massage is called Lymphatic Massage.  It’s different that your typical massage used for sore muscles as it uses very light, brush-like strokes that encourage the movement of your lymphatic fluid.  I like to include this along with the Swedish technique so to work both your lymphatic and circulatory systems.  So, if you suffer every year with allergies, come in and add something new to your routine this year.

My personal experience

I’ve personally had experience with massage being effective for allergies.  Prior to studying massage I had year round allergies and needed to take several allergy pills a week.  During my studies, when I was getting treatments every week I went from taking a pill a day, year round, to taking one or two pills a month!  So whether or not the science speaks to you,  I hope my experience does.
If you want to learn more, contact me to schedule your “Wellness Recharger” massage and learn some techniques you can do yourself.

Stretch

Oh, that dreaded question!  "So do you stretch?"  Uh...sometimes....  Of course there are some people who build it into their daily routines.  Myself, I'm still working on it, but it's truly so important.  It shares many of the same benefits as massage to the body and it's something that doesn't have to take long.  I've started a pin board of stretches on pinterest, each one specifically chosen for their benefits. So check them out & keep checking back as I'll be adding to them.

One of my personal favorites is this hamstring stretch, because it is done WITHOUT having to get down on the floor.  I think some of us avoid stretching due to the ways we were taught to stretch.  Getting down on the floor can be uncomfortable and strenuous on other parts of our body--which is a deterrent for sure.

Hope you try a few.  Enjoy!

Valentine's in the Monadnock Region

Looking for ideas for sweet Valentine's day?  Here are my pics for this year in the Monadnock Region.  How about some of Gemma's yummy Linzer cookies?  I don't know about you, but flowers never get old with me! So go get him or her some roses from Anderson the Florist.  Speaking of roses, you could make a weekend out of it and take her to Walpole's, The Inn at Valley Farm and stay in the Rose Room and top it all off with this fresh water pearl ring from Jayelay Jewelers in Westmoreland!  So, if my valentine is reading this, any of the above will score you brownie points with me :-) HAPPY V-DAY TO YOU ALL!
